- This is a great renaming app made even greater by the price (free!). The one feature it's missing that keeps it from being a full 5-star rating for me is an 'undo' feature. I sometimes have to batch rename files temporarily to run another tool that processes based on the filename, then undo that renaming scheme once done.
How to undo a batch-rename of files on Mac It's incredibly easy to undo a file rename, as long as it's the last action you performed in the finder window. With Finder selected, click on Edit in the app menu at the top left corner of the screen. Siren: http://files8.blogspot.com/2012/05/wine-formerly-darwine.html.

My gripe with R-Name is that it doesn't allow you to backreferenc regular expressions. ie. You can't search for 'Image ([0-9]+).(jpg|png|gif)' and rename it to 'Party 1.2' There are ways to get around some of these deficiencies, but R4M is ultimately supperior in my view. Plus R-Name hasn't seen development in over a year. R4M is in active development.

i am jack's amusing sig file
i used r-name so far. i really like that its so easy to use. just installed renamer4mac and i quite like it for the regex-backref and the context-menu.
i wouldn't install renamer4mac for my girlfriend, though. she doesn't know about regex.
n.
I use the application R-name, which seems to have most of the same features, plus a few extra. It does have its drawbacks, but the ability to remove extension & replace characters at range don't seem to be present in Renamer4Mac.
And like Renamer4Mac, it's donationware.

This app sounds ok, and I will try it out. As I am always looking for better ways to batch rename for work.
I found a applescript few weeks ago while looking at toolbar apps.
on the Apple site http://images.apple.com/applescript/toolbar/
'Change Names — This script functions as both a droplet and an applet. When clicked, this script will replace text in the names of folders and/or files in the front window. Drag items from the front window onto this script's icon to find and change text in their names.'
The one thing I have not found is an app that can change two parts of the same file name at the same time leaving the rest unchanged.
Maybe I could change this script to use some sort of double loop.
..
There are many more useful scripts on the above page.
There is also a script for this in the finder scripts folder called 'Replace Text in Item Names.scpt'
But the applet is better.

I have never had to batch rename anything except images. And since the example mentions renaming image files, it is worthy to note that GraphicConverter can rename the images for you. It is under the 'Convert/Modify' menu. I have used this several times for my digital images. It is also easy to rename the images using iPhoto.
I find the renaming in GC very slow. Thats why I am always looking for something that works fast. Mainly for my job where I am going through about 6000+ images in a day, and always need to edit a lot of filenames in batches.(wrong file names slugs, wrong extensions, illegal characters in file name that would stop other parts of our system processes) Running a script droplet for me is much quicker than opening one more Large program with all its windows and clicks and waiting for it to get its act together.

Until now, I've used an old free app called 'File Renamer', whose home page and developer seem to have disappeared. I've needed to rename batches of text files, sound files, image files, web page files .. I'm very glad to see a discussion of renamers here because I have wanted something better than File Renamer .. or at least, something that's still alive and well. File Renamer has suited me well, but I'm eager to see what these others offer.

Despite some lacking features, this has been my favourite renamer for the past few months, Really like the regular expression rename. I have in the past used 'a better(?) finder rename' which is extremely slow and confusing, a perl script called rename that I used with unix 'find' command. For digital photos, I use jhead which corrects rotation as well as renaming in one pass. My only two complaints with this program are inability recursive rename and save and recall past renames

It's fully functional during the evaluation period and then costs $12.50 for a single license.
